Introduction The social order of United States is rapidly changing. The original health care system was designed in such a way that it would meet the needs of the people who spoke English and were educated. Today, people from Asia, Mexico, Latin America, and Africa continue to migrate to the land of opportunities. Adequate support and resources are necessary to help those people to merge into a new culture with new standards. As a result, the nursing today has to adapt to the changing needs of the country. The lack of ability of the physicians and nurses for proper communication, and ignorance of the cultural diversities have a huge negative impact on the quality of care that is delivered. It is important to find out if they are comfortable with English, and if not, we should make sure we get an authorized translator or use the interpreter phone. Their society gives a lot of importance to personal relationships. We should try to build a rapport with the patient with some informal talk, so if we can speak their language, this will easily help us get their attention and cooperation. NPs should always be aware of non-verbal communications too. An example is maintaining eye contact. If a Hispanic patient doesn’t maintain eye contact when we talk to them, it doesn’t mean that they are ignoring us. In this culture, face to face contact is considered as intimidation or threat. Silence may indicate lack of understanding or disagreement, so the provider has to try to explain it more clearly to them. Another example is that nodding of one’s head doesn’t mean acceptance. We also should explain what we are doing before conducting a physical examination, as they may not be comfortable with others touching them. We should also consider their socio economic status. Some of them may not have health insurance, while others may be illegal immigrants. We should locate any turbulence in their mind and help them to the best of our ability.
